Demeter joins lawsuit against Monsanto GMO

nomonsanto

The Demeter Association has joined a group of approximately 50 membership organizations, seed distributors and farmers/farms in a suit challenging the chemical giant Monsanto Company's patents on genetically engineered seed , commonly referred to as GMO or genetically modified seed.  We have thoughtfully entered into this action to preemptively protect our members and non-GMO farmers in general from being accused of patent infringement should they ever become contaminated by Monsanto's genetically modified seed.  We are sure you are aware that in the past, Monsanto has indeed taken this aggressive course of action.

Oregon's Astonishing Biodynamic Winegrowers

When we first heard the title of Katherine Cole’s new book, we must admit that we did a double take. Due out this June from OSU Press, Katherine tells us that Voodoo Vintners demystifies Biodynamic winemaking to reveal the science behind the stereotype.

According to OSU Press, the provocatively titled paperback will explore how cowhorns, vortexes and the vision of Rudoph Steiner may hold the key to producing some of the finest wines in the world while simultaneously promoting an agricultural system that can help save it.

Pacific Wine Review visits COWHORN #3

In this third video from Pacific Wine Review, Barbara goes deeper on what it means to be Biodynamic and farm holistically. Watch this short report to learn more about composting, plant selection, soil management, and the science behind Biodynamic preparations.

Pacific Wine Review visits COWHORN #2

In this second video from Pacific Wine Review, Barbara explains about being both organic and biodynamic along with an introduction to closed-loop farming, perennial polyculture, inter-cropping, cover-cropping, and a year-round harvest schedule that includes truffles, asparagus, artichokes, cherries, and of course, grapes. And did you know that our winery was built entirely with lumber from our land? You’ll learn about all of this and more in this six-minute video.

Pacific Wine Review visits COWHORN #1

Thank you to our friends at Pacific Wine Review for producing a series of three videos on our vineyard, gardens and farming the Biodynamic way. Their website at PacificWineReview.com is still under construction, but they gave us the OK to share these videos with COWHORN fans. In this first one, Bill and Barbara share a bit about plant selection for rocky soil in a cold climate and our neutral oak program.

Biodynamic farming; quasi-religious hocus-pocus or not?

Niklas Jörgensen, a Stockholm-based blogger who focuses on Portuguese wines, posted a great interview with Boivinum winemaker Christoph Röper about biodynamic and organic wines. Niklas is “mad about Madeira” with a blog devoted exclusively to this unique region.

When Nicklas asked Christoph about the basics of biodynamic wines and what distinguishes them from organic wines, he said “I’d like to quote Cowhorn Vineyards in Oregon since it can’t be expressed better.”

Finally a blog on the Preps!

For those unfamiliar with the term, the “preps” or “preparations” are the substances that Biodynamic farmers use to tend to specific plant needs. The preps get a lot of attention in the press as the defining feature of Biodynamic farming. While not denying or minimizing their importance, one need only read our website to understand the small role the preps play at COWHORN. So, when the need for a prep application presented itself, we jumped on it and I started writing!

Burying the Horns

This year, burying the fall horns had a special twist. It was the first time for Jim. So, like all good friends do, we tried to play a trick on him. You can probably guess what we did. We told him that the first year each of us had buried the horns, we tasted the manure. We explained that it was very fresh, from a beautiful organically raised cow in Williams, and that it was just necessary. How would he know the goodness of the process if he didn’t try it for himself? Pedro and Noe were VERY convincing in their sincerity. We all know that Jim has a sense of humor, so we were hopeful that he might think for a minute we were serious. Well, he didn’t! He let us know in about a nano-second that he wasn’t buying any of it! Lots of laughs were had.

By now the whole crew believes in the power of the horns and the preparations. We don’t have to discuss it. We honor and acknowledge the cow and her gifts in our own Cowhorn way, with lots of laughs and lots of care in the process.
